Christopher James Dean BA, MA, MEd

    November 28, 1944 - December 4, 2021

Christopher was an honourable man, a scholar and educator, with great enthusiasm for life. For fifty years he was a respected and recognizable figure in Dundas, Ontario. Born in Berkshire UK, Chris studied at Abingdon School and Bristol University. He pursued postgraduate studies at McMaster University and the University of Toronto. A life-long learner and dedicated reader, Chris was intrigued by the world of ideas, history, law, philosophy, and theoretical physics. Beginning his career in Education as a Latin teacher at Parkside High School in Dundas, Chris became Head of English there for many years. He was a leader in bringing Canadian Literature into the curriculum. Former students vividly recall him reading from Shakespeare, engaging the class, and teaching with passion. Chris believed deeply that public education in Ontario formed the foundation of a just and civil society. His leadership and organizational skills came to the fore, first as Vice Principal at Saltfleet and Ancaster high schools, then Principal at Highland Secondary School. His vision and interpersonal skills, encouraging and motivating others, created a safe and enriching environment for young people to learn and become responsible citizens. He went on to teach at Brock University, where he co-authored a textbook on Education Law. 'Mr. Dean' was strongly supportive of other teachers, especially at the start of their careers. Many teachers have recalled that his belief in their abilities, his support, trust, wisdom and professionalism gave them the belief in themselves to grow in their chosen path. Chris had many personal interests and skills. As a boy he sang in St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, and performed in stage musicals. Acting continued to be part of his life, including at Dundas Little Theatre. His support for theatre, music, and visual arts ran through his entire life. Members of his book club admired his insights and remember his resonant reading voice. He loved to cook, and his great holiday feasts are fondly remembered by his family. He is also remembered as the calm, rational, patient, wise, and loving heart of the family. He was always thoughtful and measured in his response to any problem shared with him. He is greatly missed, now the magnificent voice is forever silenced. Christopher is survived by his sister, Julie Wood (David) in the UK. He is deeply missed by his beloved wife Jackie, and their family—Jonathan Dean (Jane), Rebecca Dean (Gary), Tavis Basford, and by grandchildren Jack, Lachlan, Samantha and Calum, and great-grandson Bennett. Friends wishing to honour Christopher’s memory may consider donations to theatre, or The Amethyst for ALS research at Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation. http://events.hamiltonhealth.ca/site/TR?fr_id=2483&pg=entry
