    Edith Elizabeth Schroedter (nee Schmidt)

    June 27, 1957 - December 1, 2021

Edith Elizabeth Schroedter (nee Schmidt) was born on June 27, 1957 in Winnipeg Manitoba, to Eduard and Olga Schmidt. She is survived by her mother Olga, brother Eric, her husband Walter and daughter Cara (Braeden). Edith grew up in Winnipeg, and attended the University of Manitoba from where she obtained a teaching degree. She taught at Churchill High, Daniel McIntyre High (where she was editor of the student newspaper) and at Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute. She also taught for one year in Winkler, Manitoba. In 1986, after becoming engaged to her future husband Walter Schroedter, she relocated to Hamilton ON where Walter was residing. On July 4, 1987 Edith and Walter were married at Rowandale Baptist Church in Winnipeg. Edith found herself busy serving in her church, Mission Baptist Church, Hamilton and teaching at several high schools. After the birth of daughter Cara, Edith suspended her teaching activities for several years to be a full-time mother. She volunteered at her daughter's schools and was actively involved in Cara's education. Later Edith returned to teaching and worked for many years with the ESL Continuing Ed department. Edith enjoyed travelling, gardening, reading (especially biographies and history) thrifting and watching murder mysteries (especially British ones). She also loved journaling, a lifelong habit that she started when she was about 14. There are many journals. She enjoyed singing in church choirs and with the Lorelei Singers as well as volunteering at Theatre Aquarius and Boris Brott concerts. Edith was a lifelong learner, taking courses of various kinds. She loved teaching, keeping up family and extended family connections. In later years Edith enthusiastically embraced jigsaw puzzling and enjoyed her gardening and plants. Edith cherished her relationship to God. At age 12 she confirmed her commitment to Jesus Christ by being baptized at McDermott Ave Baptist Church in Winnipeg. She loved the Lord and serving Him and her faith helped her through many challenges and trials. She remained devoted to her faith throughout her life and her faith was strong to the end. She was “always busy” (even as a child, according to her Dad) and kept this up throughout her life. She was organized, an exceptional planner, creative, and a good conversationalist with an inquisitive mind. She was loyal to her friends, compassionate and caring. In 2020 Edith was diagnosed with breast cancer. The treatment appeared to have been successful, but very unexpectedly the cancer returned in the fall of 2021, having metastasized into the lungs. This led to breathing complications and after a valiant and courageous battle Edith succumbed to the cancer on December 1, 2021, at the age of 64, with her daughter Cara and husband Walter at her side. Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and other practitioners who lent their expertise to help Edith with combating the disease. Thanks also to the Cancer Assistance Program for their generous and willing help. Our thanks goes out to God for sustaining Edith in this battle. Edith will be greatly missed by her husband Walter, daughter Cara and husband Braeden as well as other family members and friends. Contributions in memory of Edith can be made to Turning Point Ministries
